Not Every Get Away Requires you to break the Bank,
Mwalimu wa Maths Hapa Ni Wapi? Malindi on a Budget: The Ultimate Coastal Escape
By isaacgithua17
Thinking of taking a beach vacation without breaking the bank? Worry not—Malindi has got you covered!
When most people think of a coastal getaway, they imagine ridiculously expensive beachfront hotels and endless expenses. But during my annual holiday this year, I set out to prove that you can experience the best of Kenya’s coast on a budget—and I brought my crew of real estate gurus along for the ride.
Here is everything you need to know about planning an unforgettable, affordable trip to Malindi.
1. Getting There & Accommodation: Comfort on a Budget
We kicked off our trip by booking economy SGR (Madaraka Express) tickets from Nairobi to the Mombasa terminus for just KES 3,000 round trip. However, only use economy if your bums are ready to persevere a flat surface for 6 hours. First Class goes for 4,500. From the Mombasa terminus, jumping onto one of the available shuttles to complete the journey to Malindi cost about $8 USD (KES 1,000). If you want to cut the travel time, it will cost you about $120 one way trip from Nairobi.
To keep accommodation costs manageable for the group:
● Where we stayed: Marine Park Estate
● Cost: KES 10,000 per night (for a 3-night stay)
● What you get: A spacious, spotlessly clean 2-bedroom cottage equipped with a functional kitchen, a private swimming pool, and direct beachfront access. Splitting this among a group makes it an absolute steal!
2. Getting Around & Dining: Local Flavor & "Slow Living"
Tuktuk Adventures
In Malindi, three-wheelers—popularly known as Tuktuks—are the primary mode of transport. Rides are super cheap, starting from as low as $1 per trip.
● The Reality Check: Riding a Tuktuk comes with its own quirks. When it rains, you bear the full brunt of it, and when the coastal wind blows, you are literally the windbreaker! But honestly, there’s a strange catharsis to it—it provides the ultimate open-air environment to scream or cry out all the stress and pain you’ve endured throughout the year (or your entire life!).
Coastal Eats
Dining by the sea doesn't have to ruin your wallet:
● Breakfast at the Sea Front: Starting from as low as $0.30.
● Seafood Delights: Prawns, barracuda, and other popular catches for around $3.
● Authentic Italian Pizza: Malindi is famous for its Italian culinary influence. You can grab a delicious veggie pizza starting at around $6. Ours was so incredible that our team couldn't stop talking about it long after the last bite—we were still reminiscing about the cutlery long after finishing!
Pro-Tip on Coastal Timing: Coastal people in Kenya are never in a hurry. If you’re looking to grab a quick meal, bring a generous amount of patience along—our dear brothers and sisters take their sweet time! Sit back, relax, and embrace the slow-paced vibe.
3. Thrills at Dubai Ndogo: Mambrui Sand Dunes & Tides
October turned out to be a fantastic time to visit—the weather was warm and sunny, but completely tolerable if you don't enjoy extreme heat.
Among the endless affordable activities, my absolute highlight was quad biking at Dubai Ndogo, located at the breathtaking Mambrui Sand Dunes and Tides, where giant sand dunes meet the ocean waves.
● Cost: $22 for a 20-minute quad bike ride.
● The Package Includes: Free archery as well as horse and camel rides right along the beach!
● The Experience: Be prepared to brave the hot sun and boundless desert-like dust that finds its way everywhere.
Of course, no trip to Dubai Ndogo is complete without taking a moment to pose on top of the golden dunes for photos and dropping that classic Kenyan joke: "Mwalimu wa Maths, hapa ni wapi?!"—a playful nod to our high school math teachers to let them know that against all odds, we made it!
4. Cultural Gems & Beach Nightlife
History & Culture
For culture lovers, the National Museum of Kenya offers a 3-in-1 pass for just $1.80 that grants access to:
- The Vasco da Gama Pillar: A historic landmark standing since the 15th century, built to guide Portuguese sailors.
- The Portuguese Church: A quiet, historic site steeped in heritage.
- The Malindi Museum and Library: The perfect spot to learn about local coastal history.
Nightlife & Beach Parties
When the sun goes down, Malindi's party scene takes over. If you love beach parties, hot spots like Maasai Beach, Rosado, and Lost are top choices for revellers.
● Drinks: Beers cost around $3, while other drinks vary depending on your budget.
● Vibe: Pure coastal energy—be ready to dance all night long if you decide to join in!
